When Tumblr Is Down.com:

I was just checking my web logs and noticed a huge traffic spike on August 8th. After some digging I think I’ve found the source: soupsoup

soupsoup (aka Anthony De Rosa) is a fairly known entity in the Tumblr universe (I keep seeing his name pop up every now and then) and it looks like he has a nice following - his post resulted in some nice traffic, a few reblogs and several likes. So, thanks for posting and I’m glad you liked the site :)

Yay! I just got my first Tumblr support e-mail through my contact form :)

He was having problems accessing tumblr.com on AOL…

I tried to help him the best I could but I also pointed him towards support at tumblr dot com.

This is my favorite post from the May 12th incident. G. Taylor McKnight from The Hype Machine reblogged a screengrab from When Tumblr Is Down that his friend (?) posted that said “When Tumblr is down, you’ll have to go to The Hype Machine to find good music to listen to.”

Then David Karp (the guy that founded Tumblr) liked that post and also Anthony from The Hype Machine.

So all the right people know about this now. Mission accomplished :)

Last week Tumblr went down and people went crazy… some posted about their rage on Twitter and others went to Google to see what’s up: tumblr down?, tumblr is down… and that’s probably how some people found the site When Tumblr Is Down.

Well, word spread around… people posted about the site on Twitter and Tumblr (after it came back up) - people reblogged and liked the posts left and right (the posts were on Popular > Upcoming for a while). People were also posting screengrabs with their favorite “when tumblr is down…” sentences…

So, yeah… looks like people like this little project of mine :) It also looks like people refreshed the page a lot to see different sentences ;)

Cool, looks like Cassie found When Tumblr is down and posted it - which lead to a few reblogs and another spurt of traffic. Very nice. Oh, man… TUMBLR IS DOWN!!!

OK, well, it was down - but it’s back now (was only down for a few minutes) and now I can post this.

The title of the page said Maintenance… but there was also this text:

“Generated Wed, 31 Dec 2008 01:39:58 GMT by proxy.tumblr.com (squid/2.6.STABLE6)”

Haven’t seen that before… not sure if it’s supposed to be there or not - maybe it helps them see the origin of the error. When I tried going to my main tumblelog I got a similar message, but it said “rack1.tumblr.com”.

The problem is, I was in the middle of reblogging a post and I feared I would lose the text I had written. Fortunately I was able to use the browser’s back button without losing the text - I have to remember to always copy text before I submit it. I usually do it, but I guess I trust Tumblr too much ;) Haven’t had Tumblr go down in the middle of a reblog. But even though I was able to go back to my text I wasn’t able to hit the “ReBlog post” button - weird.

It looks like topherchris has a lot of followers. People talk about the “Digg effect”, “Boing Boing effect”, etc. - I think there is definitely also a “topherchris effect” ;)

Then it looks like somebody submitted When Tumblr is down to StumbleUpon and I got a few new visitors through that.

I’m also seeing a lot of traffic from we heart tumblr which is pretty cool, I hadn’t heard about that site before.

So, thanks for checking out this silly project of mine and thanks for all the reblogs.

I also noticed that the Tumblr staff was reviewing the topherchris post as a Radar/Explore candidate but I guess they deemed it not worthy ;)
